Incense (from Latin: incendere, "to burn") is composed of aromatic materials, which release fragrant smoke when burnt. Incense is used in religious ceremonies, ritual purification, aromatherapy, meditation, for creating a mood, and for masking bad odours. The use of Incense may have originated in Ancient Egypt, where the gum resins and oleo gum resins of aromatic trees were used in religious ceremonies. Today, Incense is still used for these purposes, as well as for creating a pleasant atmosphere and scent to enhance the ambience of a home. Incense has a long history and has evolved into many different types and forms, from its scent, to its shape, to the way it burns.
